• Balancing Speed with Compliance: In the healthcare industry, innovation must align with strict regulatory requirements (like HIPAA). One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that rapid low-code development didn’t compromise on security, auditability, or compliance. We had to build robust governance frameworks into every layer of the platform.
• Legacy System Integration: Migrating from legacy platforms while maintaining business continuity required intricate planning. Ensuring seamless interoperability between the new Pega-based system and existing enterprise applications was a major technical hurdle.
• Cultural Shift to Low-Code: Encouraging traditional development teams to adopt a low-code mindset and leverage the platform’s full potential required targeted training, change management, and mindset transformation. Gaining buy-in across departments was essential to success.
• Cloud Migration Complexity: Our move to IBM CloudPak involved containerization, security rearchitecture, and custom DevSecOps pipelines. This required solving for multi-layered performance, scalability, and data sovereignty challenges.
• Marketing the Value Internally: Demonstrating the long-term value of the investment, beyond cost savings, to leadership and business users meant we had to effectively translate technical success into business impact.

One of the most significant hindering factors during the pandemic was the sudden surge in demand for digital healthcare services, combined with the urgent need to enable remote access to critical administrative functions. Like many healthcare organisations, we faced the challenge of maintaining business continuity and care delivery while transitioning to a fully remote support model.
A key obstacle was the reliance on manual, in-person processes for approvals and documentation, especially in areas like enrollment, underwriting, and policy servicing. To overcome this, we accelerated the implementation of a secure, enterprise-wide Adobe E-sign solution, enabling remote digital signatures across multiple lines of business.
This allowed us to:
• Replace paper-based approvals with fully digital workflows.
• Maintain compliance with healthcare regulations and internal governance.
• Ensure uninterrupted processing of member and provider services—even during lockdowns.
Alongside this, we enhanced our low-code development efforts to quickly deploy digital forms and automated workflows, and strengthened DevSecOps practices to support remote deployments and administration securely.

Dr. Kalam exemplified how science, service, and humility can coexist. He believed in using technology not just for innovation, but for nation-building and human betterment. His emphasis on education, ethical leadership, and perseverance has profoundly shaped my values as a technologist and mentor.
His words—“Dreams are not what you see in sleep, they are the things that don’t let you sleep”—have been a constant reminder for me to stay curious, work hard, and use my skills to make a lasting impact.
