Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle, is transforming waste management by pioneering solutions for hard-to-recycle waste and championing reuse through Loop, a platform for products in reusable packaging. Author of Revolution in a Bottle and three other books, Tom's work has earned accolades from the United Nations, World Economic Forum, and Fortune Magazine.
I’m the founder and CEO of TerraCycle, an international leader in recycling hard-to-recycle waste streams, recycled content, and reuse. We operate in 21 countries, collaborating with some of the world’s largest brands, retailers, and manufacturers to create national platforms that recycle products and packaging that would otherwise end up in landfills or incineration.
We also developed a new circular reuse platform, Loop, which allows consumers to purchase products in reusable packaging. At TerraCycle, we’ve been fortunate to receive hundreds of awards and recognitions from organizations like the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, Fortune Magazine, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
I’ve written four books: Revolution in a Bottle, Outsmart Waste, Make Garbage Great, and The Future of Packaging.
TerraCycle is an international leader in innovative sustainability solutions, creating and operating first-of-their-kind platforms for recycling, recycled materials, and reuse. Operating in 21 countries, TerraCycle is Eliminating the Idea of Waste by developing practical solutions to today’s complex waste challenges.
The company engages a broad, multi-stakeholder community through a wide range of accessible programs—partnering with Fortune 500 companies, schools, and individuals alike.
TerraCycle is the most innovative waste management company in the world. We develop ways to collect and recycle hard-to-recycle waste streams that are not typically accepted by traditional municipal recycling services—including cigarette butts, toys, mascara wands, and much more.
Whether something is municipally recyclable depends on whether your local recycling company can profit from recycling it. If the cost of collecting and processing the waste is lower than the value of the resulting raw material, it’s likely to be locally recyclable. If the cost is higher, it likely won’t be.
TerraCycle can recycle the hard-to-recycle because we work with brands, retailers, and other stakeholders who fund the recycling process. Our free recycling programs are sponsored by brands, allowing you to recycle their products and packaging at no cost. It’s a way for them to take voluntary responsibility for the externalities of waste.
Innovation is at the core of TerraCycle’s success. From our early days (more on that here) to where we are today—an international recycling company—we’ve succeeded by continually developing solutions for hard-to-recycle waste.
For example, our in-house research and development team, made up of scientists, analyzes materials to determine how they can be recycled. They create processes to break down waste and transform it into materials for new applications. This team has developed several groundbreaking recycling methods for TerraCycle, including the process for recycling discarded cigarette butts.
We are thrilled by the growing enthusiasm surrounding reuse. Our global reuse platform, Loop, experienced significant growth in France and Japan in 2024. Products from brands like Coca-Cola, Nutella, and Evian are now available in reusable packaging at over 250 stores across retailers in France. In Japan, Loop products can be found in more than 110 stores across retailers such as Aeon, Askul, and StyleTable.
Our success in France and Japan has demonstrated that, for reuse systems to be more widely accessible, they require support from legislation, subsidies, and retailers who prioritize reuse.
