Su Li

Su Li is a packaging designer who transforms brand identity and consumer experience. The success of the Myst packaging reflects her drive to turn self-tanning from messy and inconvenient to sleek, functional, and elevated, addressing frustrations while enhancing the brand’s image.

1Congratulations on your achievements in the MUSE Creative Awards! Could you start by introducing yourself or your agency? Can you also share a bit about your journey into your current industry?

I specialize in the intricate relationship between packaging design, branding, and typography. My interest in packaging design began with my early product design projects and quickly evolved into a broader vision of how packaging shapes brand identity and consumer interaction.

Throughout my career, I have honed my expertise in both structural and label design. My experiences across various sectors have revealed key insights into how graphic and product design serve distinct roles depending on the industry. For example, in the fast-paced food industry, the structural integrity of packaging, like the iconic Coca-Cola glass bottle, is paramount and remains largely consistent, allowing graphic elements to adapt to market trends and consumer expectations.

In contrast, the beauty care sector emphasizes iconic bottle design with minimalistic graphics, where changes are more subtle and focus on materials and textures to uphold a luxury image and foster brand loyalty.

These insights have deepened my understanding and shaped my approach to developing packaging solutions that are both aesthetically pleasing and strategically effective. Striking a balance between maintaining a brand's timeless appeal and integrating innovative design elements is crucial for engaging today’s discerning consumers, and it is this balance that I strive to perfect in every project.

2What inspired you to submit your work for this competition, and what does winning mean to you personally and professionally?

My decision to submit my work to the MUSE Creative Awards was driven by a desire to benchmark my work against the best in the industry. The awards are renowned for celebrating innovation and excellence in design, providing a platform for artists to showcase their work to a global audience. Engaging in such competitions allows me to challenge conventional design norms and further elevate my work.

Winning this award holds significant meaning for me both personally and professionally. It affirms the dedication and creativity I invest in my projects, reinforcing my commitment to impactful design. Professionally, this recognition marks an important milestone, enhancing my credibility and opening doors for further collaborations and opportunities. It fuels my drive to continue advancing the design landscape and setting new standards within the industry.

3Can you share the story behind your success? What inspired its creation, and what do you feel it represents in today’s industry?

The story behind the success of the Myst packaging design stems from a desire to challenge conventional perceptions of self-tanning and create an experience that is both visually appealing and highly functional. I wanted to address common frustrations associated with self-tanning—mess, heaviness, and inconvenience—while also elevating the brand's identity. Inspiration came from the concept of natural sunlight—colorless, weightless, yet powerful—which I aimed to translate into the design to give consumers a sense of radiance and freshness.

In today's industry, this design represents a shift towards more thoughtful, user-centered packaging solutions that not only look beautiful but also enhance the overall experience. It reflects the growing importance of sustainability and practicality, as well as the desire for brands to create deeper connections with their customers through intuitive, seamless product experiences. This project embodies the idea that packaging can be both innovative and transformative, aligning with consumer expectations for convenience, aesthetics, and functionality in modern products.

4What do you believe set your project apart in such a competitive field? Were there specific elements or strategies that made it shine?

What set the Myst packaging design apart was its ability to blend aesthetic elegance with innovative functionality, redefining the self-tanning experience. The focus on creating a clean, lightweight, and effortless design challenged the common perception of tanning as messy and inconvenient. Key elements, such as the spatula applicator and waterproof gloves, added practicality, enhancing the user experience and making the process more intuitive and hygienic.

Additionally, the design was inspired by the natural radiance of sunlight, creating a subtle yet powerful connection between the packaging and the product’s transformative effects. This balance of form, function, and conceptual storytelling helped it stand out in a competitive field and resonate with consumers on both a visual and practical level.

5Every project has its challenges. Can you share a significant obstacle you faced during this process and how you overcame it?

One of the biggest challenges I faced during this project was figuring out how to keep the tanning gloves clean after use. Tanning products often leave stains on fabric, and since the gloves are in direct contact with the skin, they need to be soft and comfortable, which made finding a practical solution tricky.

I drew inspiration from my experience with ski gloves, where the waterproof material allows snow to be easily wiped off. This led me to the idea of using waterproof gloves for tanning, making it much easier to wipe off any stains.

However, to maintain the softness and comfort needed for skin contact, I added a fabric applicator layer on top of the waterproof gloves. This solution keeps the gloves clean and washable, addressing both the functional and tactile requirements of the design while making the tanning process effortless and hygienic.

6Winning an award of this caliber often brings recognition. What do you hope this achievement will mean for your career, your team, or your agency in the long run? Have you already noticed any changes or opportunities arising from this recognition?

Securing this award has been both an honor and a transformative milestone for my career. This accolade not only reaffirms my commitment to excellence and innovation in design but also enhances my standing within the industry. Looking ahead, I anticipate this recognition will catalyze further growth, opening doors to high-profile collaborations and expanding my network of industry leaders, which in turn will allow me to influence more significant projects and initiatives.

The impact of this achievement has already manifested in the form of heightened interest from both new and existing collaborators, presenting opportunities that promise to leverage my expertise on a larger scale. I am eager to capitalize on this momentum, driving forward with renewed vigor and a focus on setting new benchmarks in the design world.

7What has the reaction been from clients, audiences, or stakeholders about your winning entry? Any feedback or memorable moments that stand out?

The response to winning this award has been overwhelmingly positive, solidifying trust and enhancing my credibility within the industry, particularly among those who were previously less familiar with the intricate aspects of visual design. This accolade has served as a powerful testament to the depth and professionalism of my work, allowing clients and collaborators to engage with my design philosophy more deeply.

Feedback from stakeholders has highlighted the innovative and visionary qualities of the project, noting how the award has elevated the perceived value and impact of my designs. One memorable instance involved a client who was initially hesitant about the distinct style I proposed; however, the recognition helped shift their perspective, ultimately revealing the strategic advantage of my approach.

This has been both gratifying and motivational, reinforcing the significance of my work and paving the way for future ambitious collaborations.

8For those aspiring to achieve similar success, what advice would you offer to help them not only thrive in their industries but also craft compelling, award-worthy entries? Are there specific practices, mindsets, or strategies you believe are key?

My advice for aspiring designers is to focus on developing a strong, authentic creative vision and always stay true to your unique style. Crafting award-worthy entries requires not only technical skill but also a deep understanding of the message you want to convey and the impact it will have on your audience. Keep pushing boundaries, take risks, and don’t be afraid to experiment with new ideas or approaches.

A key strategy is to stay curious and continuously learn from others in the industry, whether through collaborations, attending design events, or staying updated on trends. Also, pay attention to the details, as it's often the small nuances that elevate a design from good to great. Most importantly, ensure your work is aligned with a purpose and speaks to a larger vision or goal.

For awards specifically, it's important to present your work in a way that clearly communicates the design journey—from concept to execution—and highlights its innovation and impact. Craft your entry thoughtfully, showcasing not only the final result but also the process and thinking behind it.

9The creative industry is constantly evolving. How do you view these changes, and where do you hope to position yourself in the future?

The creative industry is always evolving, and I find it exciting to see how new technologies, materials, and trends are shaping the way we design. As a packaging designer, I view these changes as opportunities to push the boundaries of what’s possible, particularly in the integration of both structural and label design. I believe that packaging will continue to play an even more vital role in consumer experience, and it’s crucial to stay adaptable and innovative.

In the future, I hope to position myself as a specialist who can seamlessly blend structural design with labeling design to create holistic packaging solutions. My goal is to remain at the forefront of both disciplines, continuing to explore how they can complement each other to create impactful, meaningful, and visually engaging packaging. I also aim to keep honing my skills and expanding my knowledge to adapt to new trends and technologies that will help shape the future of packaging design.

10Entering awards can be daunting for many, especially those just starting out. What would you say to individuals who have limited experience, or are hesitant to showcase their work in competitions? How can they build confidence and see the value in participating?

I understand that entering awards can feel daunting, especially for those just starting out. My advice is to view competitions as opportunities for growth rather than sources of pressure. Showcasing your work allows you to receive feedback, refine your skills, and build your portfolio. It’s not about perfection, but about sharing your creative journey and learning from the process.

Building confidence comes from recognizing that your unique perspective has value, regardless of your experience level. Start with smaller competitions to ease into the process and gradually build your confidence. Awards are a great way to validate your work, expand your network, and open up new opportunities, all while pushing yourself to grow as a designer.

11Creativity thrives on community. What message would you like to share with fellow creatives, marketers, and advertising professionals?

Creativity can come from truly unrelated subjects, so it’s important to remain open-minded and curious. The best way to foster creativity is to observe the world around you and capture as much as possible in your mind every day. You never know when seemingly random bits of knowledge or inspiration will come together to shape a new idea.

It’s all about staying receptive to different perspectives and continuously learning, because you might not see the connection now, but someday it will come into play in your work. Keep exploring, stay curious, and embrace the unexpected sources of inspiration that will help you grow as a creative professional.

12If you could describe your award-winning entry in one sentence, what would it be and why?

The Myst packaging series for NKD SKN reimagines the self-tanning experience by blending elegance, innovation, and ease, transforming tanning from a messy and inconvenient task to a clean, lightweight, and refreshing ritual, all inspired by the natural radiance of sunlight.

This design is impactful because it goes beyond aesthetics, introducing practical solutions such as the spatula applicator and waterproof gloves to make the tanning process smoother and more hygienic. It not only enhances the visual appeal but also improves functionality, ultimately elevating the user experience and changing the way customers perceive and engage with the product.

13Finally, what’s next for you? Any exciting projects or upcoming goals that you’d like to share with us and the audience?

Next, I’m excited to continue exploring innovative packaging design, with a growing focus on sustainability and user-centered design. One area I’m particularly interested in is the concept of "digital packaging." As e-commerce continues to grow, there’s a possibility that consumers may no longer physically interact with packaging before purchasing.

I’m eager to explore how packaging can be translated into the digital space—creating an experience that resonates with consumers online and maintains its impact without the physical presence. This shift opens up new challenges and opportunities for creative solutions that will be vital in the future of retail.

Additionally, I’m working on projects that allow me to combine both structural and label design, all while keeping practicality and beauty at the forefront of my approach.
