Following the success of "The Muralz," a short film by Rawr Pictures from Malaysia that garnered multiple awards at film festivals worldwide, this year marks the release of its sequel, "The Muralz - Year of the Flying Dragon." The 7-and-a-half-minute 2024 Chinese New Year video, produced in association with PETACE and Penang Global Tourism, continues the tradition of engaging storytelling through a unique blend of 2D and 3D animations.
Rawr Pictures' latest film masterfully weaves together the diverse cultural elements of Malaysia within its brief runtime. Set against the vibrant backdrops and streets of Penang, Malaysia, the film not only showcases the region's picturesque landscapes but also educates viewers on key Chinese New Year traditions. These include the significance of wearing red clothes, the importance of reunion dinners, and the custom of cleaning the house before the New Year, among others.
The film’s narrative, celebrating the Year of the Dragon, follows Tong Tong, a young boy eagerly anticipating the return of his father, Mr. Wong. The storyline gains cultural depth through Mr. Wong’s name, ‘Wong Fei Long,’ which translates to ‘Flying Dragon’ in English, adding layers of symbolism and meaning. The setting in Penang, home to the UNESCO-listed George Town, further enhances the film’s cultural authenticity and serves as a rich canvas that highlights the region’s allure to global audiences.
Mr. Wong, a chef working abroad and born in the Year of the Dragon, plays a central role in the story. Tong Tong’s favorite dish, his father's signature ‘Flying Dragon Char Koay Teow,’ becomes a symbol of their familial bond. Through its dreamlike narrative, "The Muralz - Year of the Flying Dragon" introduces audiences to the warmth of Chinese New Year traditions while telling a heartwarming family story.
The film beautifully integrates elements of culture, tourism, and animation, offering a captivating glimpse into the charm of Chinese New Year celebrations, the strength of family ties, and the culinary delights that define the festive season.
