1Congratulations on your achievement! What inspired you to submit this project for the NY Architectural Design Awards?
My design belief matches the theme of the NY Architectural Design Awards. Innovative thinking on futuristic architecture is what I am interested in. With the big picture, I incorporated sustainable design into the project by combining green spaces with high-rise buildings. The hybrid comes as a prototype to enlarge the vocabulary of future architecture.
2What is the defining concept or vision behind your award-winning project?
The defining concept is to incorporate sustainable design into the project by combining green spaces with high-rise buildings. The hybrid aims to provide a prototype that can be integrated into any urban area.
3Could you briefly share your journey into architecture and what inspired you to pursue this field?
I developed an interest in culture, society, and our built environment when I was young. Architecture encompasses all the aspects organically. At the same time, I am passionate about innovative thinking, and architecture is a great medium for me to visualize my thoughts and influence other people.
4How would you describe the mission or goals of your company or studio?
To deliver socially responsible design with the thought of innovative thinking.
5Were there any unexpected challenges during the design or construction phases? How did they shape the final result?
Yes, there are. My initial idea is to provide a meandering walking path on high-rise to build a vertical garden. It is hard to resolve circulation while incorporating green space on the exterior. Considering the challenge, I reshape the building form to make the circulation part of the massing idea. And I provide a coherent green path while creating platforms at each level as a pause for people to stop and have activities.
6How does your design process usually unfold-from ideation to completion?
In general, I will come up with a few ideas that are related to the main topic. And I will try to integrate the ideas into a storyline that manifests my design strategy. During the process. I may abandon ideas that are irrelevant to the strategy. Moving on, I will translate the design strategy into spatial language.
7If you had to describe the journey of this project in three words, what would they be?
Sustainability, urbanity and lifestyle.
8What feedback have you received about your work that has been particularly meaningful or surprising
1) The facade treatment should emphasize verticality to balance the spiral circulation that is mainly horizontal.
2) Use the existing urban fabric to study the necessity of green space and analyze both the pros and cons of high-rise buildings.
9What does receiving this recognition mean for you, your team, or your studio?
This recognition means a lot to me. It stimulates me to keep exploring the relationship between green space and modern cities. I would like to study further on urban fabrics to promote sustainability and prototypical design strategies that fit into future architecture.
10How do you see this award influencing your future projects or career?
The award will motivate me to achieve socially responsible designs by integrating innovative ideas with prototypical design strategies.
11What's a project or idea you've been dreaming of bringing to life, and why does it inspire you?
Living in a metropolis, I have always thought about improving the living/working quality while residing in a concrete jungle. The award allows me to integrate sustainable design ideas to extend the definition of high-rise working space. The potential transition in lifestyle is something I always want to bring to life.
12Where do you see the architectural field heading in the next decade, and how do you envision contributing to its evolution?
Architecture will evolve to adapt to human needs as society progresses. As a designer and architect, I will always contribute innovative ideas with socially responsible design strategies to resolve social crises and stimulate new lifestyles.
13How do you see your designs contributing to the future of sustainable architecture?
By combining green spaces with high-rise buildings. The hybrid aims to provide a prototype that can be integrated into any urban area. The prototype calls for a new living/working lifestyle that emphasizes the importance of sustainability.
14If you could design anything, with no limits on budget or imagination, what would it be?
If there is no budget or limitation, I would challenge existing urban typologies by integrating climate-adaptive design to let buildings actively contribute to environmental restoration.
