Yulia Gonina is a type designer and founder of Schrifteria Foundry. Her passion for typography inspires her to create unique typefaces that blend artistic vision with practical design solutions. She draws inspiration from her surroundings, from the romantic cityscapes of Stockholm to the dynamic energy of Belgrade.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q1. Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your creative background.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m Yulia Gonina, a type designer and founder of Schrifteria Foundry. My passion for typography has led me to create unique typefaces that blend artistic vision with practical design solutions. Over the years, I\u2019ve drawn inspiration from the environments I\u2019ve lived in, from the romantic cityscapes of Stockholm to the dynamic energy of Belgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before founding my own studio, I worked as an art director at TypeType. Today, I\u2019m proud to have my work recognized, including winning gold at the Muse Creative Awards for SFT Schrifted Serif.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q2. What made you become\/why did you choose to become a creative?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve always been drawn to visual expression, particularly how shapes and forms communicate emotions and ideas. Typography felt like a natural path for me because it combines both structure and creativity. I love how typefaces can give voice to content and influence how we experience it. Designing fonts allows me to balance artistic freedom with functional precision, which is incredibly fulfilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q3. Tell us more about your business\/company, job profile and what you do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schrifteria Foundry is a boutique type design studio where we create distinctive typefaces for brands, designers, and creatives worldwide. I lead the design process, collaborating with freelance designers on some projects, while also managing the business side of the studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My role involves everything from researching and sketching initial concepts to overseeing font development and working closely with clients to create customized font solutions that meet their needs. Schrifteria is about crafting type that not only looks beautiful but also serves a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q4. What does creativity mean to you? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To me, creativity is about finding new ways to express ideas and solve problems. It\u2019s not just about making something visually appealing, but about creating something meaningful and functional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In type design, creativity means balancing aesthetics with readability and ensuring that each font brings something unique to the table. It\u2019s about pushing boundaries while still respecting the craft and purpose behind each design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q5. To you, what makes a ‘creative’ idea and\/or design?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A creative idea or design is one that offers a fresh perspective and addresses a need in an unexpected way. In type design, it\u2019s about capturing a distinctive voice that enhances communication while being mindful of how it will be used in real-world applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
