She holds a B.S. in Psychology and an MPH from Morgan State University, and a Ph.D. in Health Behavior from Indiana University.

Q1. Please provide us a brief bio of yourself and your health industry background.

I am Dr. Caroline Kingori, Ph.D., MPH, an expert in community and public health, currently serving as the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and a Professor at Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions. My academic journey began with a B.S. in Psychology and an MPH in General Public Health from Morgan State University, followed by a Ph.D. in Health Behavior from Indiana University.

My research interests focus on sexual and reproductive health, particularly among African immigrants and refugees, and people of African descent. My work addresses critical issues such as HIV/AIDS stigma, reproductive health, and the comorbidity of HIV with non-communicable diseases.

I have conducted extensive community-based research in the US, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, and Botswana, exploring topics like cervical cancer, pregnancy expectations, and the uptake of hormonal contraceptives.

In addition to my research, I am committed to mentoring students and junior faculty, fostering a collaborative research environment. I have also played significant roles within the American Public Health Association (APHA), serving as Section Chair, chair-elect, and in various leadership positions in the HIV/AIDS Section and the International Health Section.

Q2. What motivated you to pursue this particular health initiative, and what impact has it had on individuals or communities?

I was motivated to pursue my health initiatives due to a deep commitment to addressing health disparities among marginalized populations, particularly those of African descent, immigrants, and refugees. My extensive research on HIV/AIDS stigma and reproductive health reflects my dedication to improving health outcomes in these communities.

My motivation stems from a desire to combat the stigma and discrimination that often accompany these health issues, which can hinder individuals from seeking necessary care and support.

My impact has been significant, both in academic circles and in the communities I serve. Through community-based participatory research, I have worked on projects in the US, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, and Botswana, addressing crucial health issues such as cervical cancer, pregnancy expectations, and the uptake of hormonal contraceptives.

These efforts have led to greater awareness and understanding of these issues, fostering improved health behaviors and outcomes among the targeted populations.

Additionally, my role as a mentor and educator has amplified my impact. I lead the Reproductive and Sexual Health Initiative at Ohio University, where I train students and junior faculty in research methodologies. This initiative not only advances academic knowledge but also empowers the next generation of public health professionals to continue addressing health disparities.

My involvement in the American Public Health Association (APHA) and my recent appointment to the Board of Directors for the Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services further exemplify my commitment to public health and community service. My work has helped shape public health policies and practices, ensuring that they are inclusive and equitable.

Ultimately, I developed the podcast Public Health Musings in 2020 to provide a platform where public health information can be synthesized into layman’s language to better connect with the public.

Q3. Tell us more about your business/company, your job profile, and the specific responsibilities you undertake?

As the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and a Professor of Community and Public Health at Ohio University’s College of Health Sciences and Professions, my role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities:

Administrative Leadership: As Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, I oversee faculty development, including recruitment, retention, and promotion. I provide support and guidance to faculty members, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities necessary for professional growth and academic success.

Teaching and Mentoring: I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in public health, including Global Health Programming, Preventing HIV and STIs, Health Behavior Theory in Public and Community Health, and Maternal and Child Health in Africa.

My role as an educator involves not only imparting knowledge but also mentoring students and junior faculty, guiding them in their academic and research pursuits.

Research and Publications: My research focuses on sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS stigma, and community-based participatory research. I have published numerous articles on these topics, contributing valuable insights to the field of public health.

My work often explores the intersection of cultural context and health behaviors, aiming to develop culturally sensitive health interventions.

Community Engagement and Public Health Initiatives: I lead the OHIO Reproductive and Sexual Health Initiative, collaborating with community organizations to address public health issues. This initiative involves training students and supporting junior faculty in research projects that aim to improve health outcomes in underserved communities.

Professional Associations and Leadership Roles: I am actively involved in the American Public Health Association (APHA), where I have held various leadership positions, including Chair-Elect of the HIV/AIDS Section. My role in APHA involves shaping public health policies, organizing conferences, and advocating for public health issues at a national level.

Advisory and Board Roles: I also serve on the Board of Directors for the Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services, an organization that supports immigrants and refugees in Central Ohio. This role allows me to contribute to the development and implementation of programs that enhance the health and well-being of these communities.

Through these multifaceted responsibilities, I play a crucial role in advancing public health education, research, and community engagement, both within Ohio University and in the broader public health community.

Q4. Can you share a specific story or testimonial that exemplifies the positive impact your project has had on an individual or community?

My podcast, Public Health Musings, has made a significant positive impact on individuals and communities by addressing pressing public health issues through engaging discussions and expert insights. One notable episode features a testimonial from a public health professional who credits the podcast with inspiring actionable changes in their community.

This particular listener, involved in community health initiatives, highlighted how an episode on using virtual reality to address the opioid crisis provided innovative strategies that were subsequently implemented in local programs, leading to improved interprofessional communication and empathy development among healthcare providers.

Another impactful story involves the podcast’s coverage of health equity. In an episode featuring Dr. Renée Branch Canady, the discussion on advancing health equity and inclusion provided practical insights that were adopted by a community organization. This organization, which works with underserved populations, used the strategies discussed in the podcast to enhance their outreach and engagement efforts, ultimately improving health outcomes in their community.

These examples underscore the podcast’s role in disseminating valuable public health knowledge and fostering community-level changes, illustrating my broader impact in the field of public health. For more information, you can explore the Public Health Musings Podcast and related episodes.

Q5. What inspired you to create this health-related creative project, and what message or impact were you aiming to convey?

I was inspired to create the Public Health Musings podcast to bridge the gap between public health knowledge and practical application, aiming to inspire action and positive change in communities. My extensive experience in public health research, particularly in addressing health disparities and stigma, drove me to use this platform to disseminate valuable information and engage with a broader audience.

My work has consistently focused on the intersection of health, culture, and community, particularly among marginalized populations. This podcast serves as an extension of my commitment to public health education and advocacy. By featuring experts and discussing diverse public health topics, I aim to empower listeners with the knowledge and tools to effectively address health issues in their communities.

The primary message I aim to convey through my podcast is the importance of understanding and addressing public health challenges from a multidisciplinary and culturally sensitive perspective. I emphasize the need for innovative solutions and collaborative efforts to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities.

The impact I hope to achieve includes:

– Increased Awareness: Raising awareness about critical public health issues and emerging challenges.

– Educational Resource: Providing a platform for public health professionals, students, and community members to learn and stay updated on the latest research and practices.

– Inspiration for Action: Motivating individuals and organizations to take proactive steps towards improving public health in their own communities.

By leveraging the power of storytelling and expert insights, my podcast seeks to make complex public health topics accessible and actionable for a diverse audience.

Public Health Musings
