Alex Shim is a product designer with a master’s degree in electronic engineering and he started designing and building furniture in 2016. Alex Shim’s goal is to reinterpret traditional Korean furniture design and adapt it to modern use. He believes that good design must be simple and can attract attention and leave a lasting impression on people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q1. Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hi, my name is Alex Shim. I have a master’s degree in electronic engineering and it has not been since I started my career as a product designer. I started designing and building my furniture in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q2. What made you become\/why did you choose to become a product designer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you think about it, furniture occupies the largest proportion of the space and we are surrounded by furniture most of the time. Furniture can take any form depending on its use and can reflect an individual’s taste. In this way, it’s nice to see my furniture highlight a space and share my taste with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q3. Tell us more about your business\/company, job profile, and what you do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, I am mainly working on reinterpreting and expressing the techniques and design of traditional Korean furniture to suit modern use and design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q4. What does \u201cdesign\u201d mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communicating with the public by expressing my tastes through objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q5. What\u2019s your favorite kind of design and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like designs that are simple but have a single highlight. A simple design is concise and its simplicity can provide comfort. The monotony of simplicity may seem boring, but it can attract attention and leave a lingering impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q6. To you, what makes a \u201cgood\u201d design?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To me, a good design is one in which the designer’s tastes resonate with the public, while aesthetic elements do not harm the functional elements of the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q7. Describe your design style and its main characteristics.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I closely observe the artistic expressions and techniques of our (Korean) ancestors in the past, reinterpret them to suit current uses and trends, and express my feelings for the furniture I build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q8. Tell us about your design process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I first consider the use of the furniture and the space where the furniture will be placed and collect data accordingly. Keeping space in mind, I sketched several design concepts that fit the atmosphere of the space. Once the design concept is established to some extent, I use 3D modeling tools on the computer to further develop and modify the design. Then I developed a two-dimensional product design to determine the production process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q9. Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The culture and artistic expression of my ancestors are very delicate, and each process contains the soul of the woodworker. The delicacy and sincerity that go into each process give me a lot of inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
