Ren\u00e9 Kuipers is a photographer living in the Netherlands. He studied photography for 1.5 years at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam and exhibited 5 portraits at The Krasnapolsky Hotel for 7 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interview With The 2023 New York Photography Awards Winner<\/strong> \u2013 Ren\u00e9 Kuipers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q1. Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am Rene Kuipers, 48 years old and I live in Heemskerk, The Netherlands. I started with photography when I was about 16. I used an analog Minolta Dynax 7000i and I used mainly diafilm, because this was the cheapest option. I actually had no clue what I was doing. But I liked the technical part of photography. I photographed everything! Landscapes, architecture, my holidays, except people! Many years later I took a photography course and I learned very much about photography techniques which helped me a lot to make better images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also came in touch with studio portrait photography through a friend. That was some eye opener for me! I really liked it to use studio flashes to control the light where I wanted it to be. Again a few years later I shoot mainly portraits, especially from dancers from a dance school of a friend of mine. And I have my own studio to do all of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q2. Where did you study photography?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I studied photography for about 1,5 year at the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q3. Do you remember your first shot? What was it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can’t remember my first shot, but my first main portrait project was for The Krasnapolsky Hotel in Amsterdam, and despite lots of things went wrong (which was not my fault) I had 5 portraits displayed in the hotel restaurant for about 7 years, that was really awesome!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q4. What equipment do you use?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

now a’m using a Canon R6 and a 5DmkIII, Recently I bought an Analog Yashica Mat 124G which I use to do studio shoots too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
