<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q1. Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am an adman, product designer and entrepreneur. I\u2019ve been in the creative advertising industry for over 15 years with international experience working in multinational agencies like TBWAChiatDay Los Angeles, Saatchi Los Angeles, Leo Burnett Dubai, BBDO Beijing and MRM\/Mccann New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve built local and global integrated campaigns for major brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Toyota, Emirates Airlines, Cartier, VISA, Enfamil, Tencent, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q2. What made you become\/why did you choose to become a product designer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It started out with a need for a creative outlet and time away from my daily advertising job back then. I wanted to create a company that allowed me to come up with products which I have complete creative control of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What started out as a passion project became a steady business for me. That\u2019s how Makina Watches was born! And ever since then I\u2019ve been designing our own products since 2017 until this very day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q3. Tell us more about your business\/company, job profile, and what you do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Makina Watches is a watch brand from the Philippines. All watches are designed, engineered and made in the Philippines with movements coming from Switzerland and some parts from Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it is a business, our intent is to maintain a passion project mindset when developing products and building our brand; we release products based on what we like and not popular trends or what sells more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though Makina primarily targets the niche world of watch enthusiasts, we are comfortable in pushing watch design archetypes towards directions that may not sit comfortably well with watch purists whom Makina intends to speak to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q4. What does \u201cdesign\u201d mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To me, design is when idea, beauty and function come together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q5. What\u2019s your favorite kind of design and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This changes all the time for me. Flavor of the month is Brutalist!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q6. To you, what makes a \u201cgood\u201d design?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good design is one that looks good, answers the brief, adapts to users and fits in this day and age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A great design is one that has a defining personal touch, goes beyond the brief, one that users are willing to adapt to and is timeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q7. Describe your design style and its main characteristics. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will say that minimalism, personally, is not my go-to approach because minimalism strips away character. Character is important to me because it\u2019s what gives non-living things that human-touch. I also think \u201cperfect\u201d is boring. When designing, I usually like to add imperfections or design cues that wouldn\u2019t normally be considered popular design decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q8. Tell us about your design process. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This changes all the time for me too. One thing that doesn\u2019t change in my process is making sure that I stay away from the computer, from the internet for several days and draw inspiration from my own brain first and mentally dig up things I\u2019ve seen and experienced in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it is inspiration in the form of an object, design or architecture that I remember, it must mean something to me and therefore will have a better influence in the final design to have more of a personal touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q9. Congratulations! As the winner of the 2023 NY Product Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is actually Makina\u2019s first time in submitting to a prestigious award program and we\u2019re extremely happy to be the recipient of 2 Gold Medals from the 2023 NY Product Design Awards. It means a great deal to us and has inspired us to do better and bring forth even more submissions for next year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
