Documenting Bulgaria's Abandoned Villages
Todor Tilev takes viewers on a visual journey through the remote villages of the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria. His project, titled "Forgotten," reveals hidden corners of a landscape where time appears to stand still. The villages, home to only 1 to 15 residents, present a quiet, somber narrative of a way of life that persists despite isolation.
The Rhodope Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop with rugged terrain and sprawling vistas. Visitors face challenging access routes, especially during the final five to ten kilometers leading to these secluded settlements. One cannot help but ask: What draws the local inhabitants to continue living in these remote areas, far removed from modern society?
When questioned, the villagers offer a genuine response: "We have lived here our whole life, and we will stay here until we die." Their words encapsulate a deep bond with the land and a lasting connection to their ancestral homes.
The images captured by Tilve depict landscapes that are both striking and thought-provoking. Aerial views show a yellow-hued terrain reminiscent of an endless autumn, adding to the villages’ nostalgic aura. Photographs of dilapidated buildings, houses lacking doors, broken windows, and irregular roof tiles evoke scenes reminiscent of medieval tales. These visuals not only document decay but also highlight a unique charm rooted in history and nature. The weathered structures serve as silent storytellers, offering clues about a past life filled with community and tradition.
